2025-2026高二学英语报套题:

It was a cool April night in Maine, on the eve of Easter. My extended family had journeyed north to Mom’s house near Moosehead Lake to celebrate together. After greeting everyone in the house, I stepped outside for some deep breaths.

The cold, fresh air helped for a moment. But then, despite the noise inside and the traffic nearby, I heard a quiet meow (猫叫声). I looked around and called, but no cat came running. Eventually, I went back inside. Tiger, the orange cat, and gray Charlie were there, but Chocolate, the dark one, was missing. This wasn’t unusual, though, since she was the most independent of the bunch. Perhaps it was a neighbor’s cat that I’d heard.

For the rest of the evening, I was busy preparing Easter dinner and catching up with cousins I hadn’t seen in months. I forgot about the soft meow until I was settled in my childhood bed. However, just when I was about to fall asleep, I heard the cat meowing again. I got up and searched the bathroom and living room, but found nothing. Moments later, that meow came again, making me look out the window. I even went outside again. The meowing kept coming, yet there was still nothing to see. I rushed inside to grab a flashlight, and my brother immediately volunteered to help. We checked the yard, the front steps, the roof and even the trees, but we didn’t see any cats.

Maybe we heard it wrong. My brother reasoned that we should get some sleep. It was late. Soon, everyone would wake up and celebrate Easter. We couldn’t spend the entire night searching for a cat.

Still, when I tried to sleep, it was nearly impossible. Every time I managed to sleep, I would hear another meow. I must have managed to sleep at some point, because I was woken up around 5:00 in the morning by my brother. Something occurred to him—we forgot the basement (地下室). It hadn’t even crossed our minds, mostly because it hadn’t been used for years.

We walked through the house to the basement door.

There was Chocolate, stuck between two heavy boxes.
