“Amy, you should go for it,” Artie said, giving my shoulder a squeeze as we stood gazing at the poster. “Cinderella — auditions (试镜) this Thursday after school,” the words showed.
“Me?” My voice came out full of doubt.
“Come on, Amy. You probably know the entire play by heart. You are the best person for Cinderella!” he encouraged.
I knew he was being kind, but he probably wasn’t wrong. I could recite almost every single line in the play. The story was my all-time favorite.
When we reached the hall on Thursday, I wished I hadn’t signed up for this audition. It had been easier to feel hopeful several days ago when my name was the only one on the paper. Since then, seven other girls had added their own names to the list, including Sherry Anderson, the head cheerleader (拉拉队长). Only one of us would land the lead role, and chances were I would only get a small, unimportant part, or in the worst case, serve as an understudy (替角).
Luckily, we were given a moment to practice before the auditions began. “Good,” Mr. Cordoza said approvingly as he stopped by and listened to my practice. I felt a glimmer of hope. “Now let’s see how you get on performing on the stage in front of everyone.” He clapped his hands for attention, signaling the start of the auditions.
Sherry Anderson was up first. She showed great confidence as she recited her lines, shining as usual with her attractive grace and infectious energy. Although the lines sounded somewhat empty, her stage presence was truly eye-catching.
Then it was my turn. As I climbed the stairs to the stage, I tripped, nearly falling flat on my face. I felt my cheeks burning.
“Take your time,” Mr. Cordoza said gently.
“Sorry, I...I...” I mumbled. I tried to calm my breathing, but the nerves tightened in my throat.
At this critical moment, I could feel the weight of a hundred eyes watching me.
